In selecting a graduate school, I was clueless. I wanted to stay with a university and geology department approximately the same size as the University of North Dakota Geology Department, and since I had no idea what my chances were of admission, considering my pre-Air Force academic record. So I applied to nine grad schools, including UND, Northwestern, Oregon State, Montana State, Washington, Washington State, Minnesota-Duluth, and the University of Calgary.

I wound up accepting an offer from the University of Calgary, only because I had liked being stationed on Vancouver Island in the Air Force. I knew nothing about the Geology Department, and it turned out that it was subservient to the oil business, which was not my bent. But I taught two sections of the Introductory Geology course, plus Engineering Geology, Geomorphology, and Environmental Geology.

I left right after Spring semester for Bozeman, Montana and MSU.
